Reading Buddies
Synopsis - The Reading Buddies Program is a free program that pairs trained teen volunteers with younger students in grades 1-3 for one-on-one shared reading. This program is designed to give each child not tutoring, but extra reading practice and the opportunity to share in a fun reading experience with a caring teen mentor. These buddies will take turns reading aloud, engage in interactive reading through discussion and varied reading activities.

Session- Two sessions will be open for January 2017; Mondays from 4:30pm to 5:15pm, and Wednesdays from 4:30pm to 5:15pm. Flexible daytime scheduling is available for homeschool students and teens. Students and volunteers will attend one session a week, running from Monday, January 23 to Wednesday, April 24.

Become a Little Reading Buddy- Students in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade are eligible to participate, priority given to Bentonville Public Library cardholders. Students must be able to attend all – or almost all – of the meetings; attendance is vital to the success of the program. Students’ parent or guardian must remain in the library during the meetings. Applications for student participation will be available in the Children’s Department of the Bentonville Public Library. As there are limited spots available, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Become a Big Reading Buddy- Teens can also apply to volunteer to be a Big Buddy. Big Buddies are teens who love books, enjoy reading aloud, and like to spend time with children. This is a great volunteer opportunity to add to a résumé or college application, along with the possibility of recommendation letters from the coordinator. Teens accepted to volunteer commit to regular attendance at each scheduled session – volunteers are scheduled for one session weekly. Teens interested are encouraged to fill out a teen volunteer application at bentonvillelibrary.org and indicate interest in “Reading Buddy Program’ in the notes field.
